That's when Wolfire Games first announced anthropomorphic animal brawler Overgrowth, and now it's due to receive its final update - version 1.3. Also, that sudden end is supposed to be a cliffhanger to build the story of Overgrowth onto.September 17th, 2008, nearly a full decade ago. i think it has a lot to do because they hired an actual writer to write the story this time, before it was just made by the devs. What's the title of Lugaru's sequel, again? Overgrowth. The kicker? Ash, the Alpha Wolf, warns Turner that if he defeats the wolves, he will disrupt the course of nature: the rabbits of Lugaru island will overpopulate, bringing famine and civil war. Nothing ever replaced all this subtext in the new campaign, so it just feels empty without all those details. The fact that Turner wears that armor through the rest of the campaign has no significance anymore: why didn't he just take the armor from that random raider sentry earlier on? It's exactly the same as Aspen's, now. That armor was probably custom made! But in the rewritten campaign, the armor Aspen's wearing isn't even mentioned, and it looks like any simple plate armor would. Fiver doesn't even know Turner, but deeply respects him anyway). I always thought that his armor was significant, especially since he seems to be well known as some kind of war hero (just look at what Fiver thinks of him. If you look at it closely, the armor is strangely ornate (especially the forearm guards). Willow was having some sort of misanthropic breakdown) The thing is, Lugaru's original story seems pretty simple, but it's chock-full of subtext in all the little details, so the legitimately little changes are just as bad, if not worse.įor example, take the moment when Turner meets Aspen at the raiders' base - In the original Lugaru, Turner clearly mentions that Aspen is wearing his armor he stole it when his raider band attacked Turner's village. (notably, Jack was motivated by duty and personal honor. who is an entirely different character of the opposite gender, has a totally different personality, and a far more realistic motivation for his actions. Willow is a newcomer and essentially replaces Jack. Heck, most of them aren't "small" changes at all: the entire subplot with Skipper was removed. You have more chances for original stories, but don't label this one with the name of the game we old school fans know and love.Īnd sure, these may be small changes, but they are still enough to ruin the original story. It would've been very easy to keep the story unchanged but improve everything else. Overall i'm very disapointed, I can't call this a Lugaru story, it's just not the same. Even with their decent editor, they didn't do much to make the characters come to life, such as having them walk in cutscenes and small things like that. They had all the tools to make a great remake of the story but they decided to make changes that are not true to the Lugaru plot. This was unexpected, especially since they took a long time just to implement this. The improved visuals of the Lugaru levels were a welcome change but it was unecessary to completely change the story, it's way too different.Īnother issue is that Wolfire didn't even complete the story, it ends abruptly and in a weird way without even finishing it. The main problem I had with it is the fact that the story changed, some pieces of dialogue were improved but major plot was completely modified from it's original counterpart. Unfortunately, I was very disapointed as I played all the story levels. I used to play that a lot and I couldn't wait until I could try this out. I was excited to learn that the latest update was going to include the story of Lugaru.
